Another recently completed painting inspired by a misty walk along the towpath in Wivenhoe.

In January I began some pictures based on some photographs I took whilst walking by the River Colne near Wivenhoe in Essex.

This painting was begun at the same time as Rising Mist and Fantasia and recently completed.

This is a different photographic version of this painting. The other one is featured in the Fantasy section and there are several blogs about it. This painting has been very difficult to photograph for various reasons perhaps because it’s quite a dark picture. This painting is inspired by Arnold Rocklin’s ‘The isle of the dead’. Landscape near Lavacurie – 18” x 24” Oil on Panel 1992. I spent several weeks in a remote village called Lavacurie high up on the Central Massif in southern France. This was the view from the house where I was staying.

Secret stairs – 38” x 40” Oil on Panel 1985. I should like to walk up an ancient stairway overgrown with wisteria and overhung with cherry blossoms. This picture may be self-indulgent but I don’t care, it creates a soothing atmosphere and I love the subtle detail.

The Sacred Pool – 36” x 38” Oil on Panel 1989. This picture was begun on location in North Fambridge. I tried adding figures at various times during its development but they never seemed to work. In the end I decided that the picture worked best without people and I abandoned myself to the joy […]

Abney Park Cemetery under Heavy Snowfall – 48” x 48” Oil on Panel 1988. Abney Park in Stoke Newington is a vast overgrown Victorian cemetery and it has provided the inspiration for a number of paintings.

Melting Snow in Abney Park Cemetery – 23” x 30” Oil on Panel 1989. I wish paintings of cemeteries were popular with the public as I have painted quite a few.

Alresford Abbey – 23” x 28” Oil on Panel 1995. This picture was painted on the spot during a particularly hot summer.
