I’ve worked on this picture off and on over a period of years. Both the hands and the lily intrude into the space outside the picture plane. Making use of the space in front of the picture is something that I often do. I think it helps the viewer to engage with a portrait such as this. There were technical challenges involved in posing for this picture which involved a certain amount of painting from memory. I wanted to create a self portrait unlike any other so in the final version I have my eyes shut.
