Psyche’s Dream – 18” x 24” Oil on Canvas 2007.
This painting depicts an episode in the story of Eros and Psyche. Eros (also known as Cupid) has fallen in love with a beautiful girl, much to the chagrin of his mother, Aphrodite. For a god to seek a permanent relationship with a mortal was taboo to the Olympians and what’s more Psyche was said to be more beautiful than Aphrodite herself. Therefore the lovers were forced to meet in secret. In my picture we see Eros in the background summoning the three Fates at a secret shrine. He wants to ask the Fates for advice about the outcome of his current liaison. In the foreground we see Psyche tossing and turning in her sleep as she dreams of her lover. A good version of this story appears in ‘The Golden Ass’ by Apuleius.
