Orpheus Playing To The Animals

Orpheus playing to the Animals – 30” x 39” Oil on Panel, 1998.

Orpheus was a poet and musician in Greek Mythology. Apollo gave him a golden lyre and the music he played was so beautiful that the birds and animals would gather around to listen. This subject has been painted by several artists including Roelant Savery, Dosso Dossi and Sebastian Vrancx. The underlying meaning to the myth is the power of music to soften the animal passions in mankind. In my painting it’s as if the animals have been transported to a magical realm by the music and each individual or family group is unaware of the others. The animals are not painted in scale to each other as I didn’t think this was necessary. This is a magic moment after all. The picture is intended to be educational, over a hundred different species of bird and beast are depicted and some of these have gone extinct since the picture was painted. I had hoped that this picture could be marketed in the form of a jigsaw and a puzzle company did get interested some years ago, unfortunately the deal fell through and I haven’t had the time to pursue this project further.
